More than 400 people
packed the Fairview Park Marriott on Friday, November 6th to party,
bid and celebrate at the Leadership Fairfax Gala and Auction. After
two hours of heavy bidding on the more than 200 silent auction items
Board Chair Colleen Gillis Snow and emcee Peggy Fox of WUSA 9 kicked
off the night and the festivities.

PPC won a fierce bidding war
for “the First Drink of the Night”. The prize? Glowing
"Cosmopolitans" delivered by Wayne Hill.
|
|
|
Next was the first
“Heads or Tails game”. More than 200 people vied for
the chance to win the Wii and the Wii fit, and ultimately it was
Phil Sparks, LFI ’03, who walked away with the prize.
|
|
|
Following dinner, guest auctioneer
Ike Swart revved up the crowd as they bid on the live auction
items. Competitions between the groups ensued as guests tried
to win the wine tour for 12; the Outer Banks beach house; the
Ultimate Reston Town Center Adventure; the Julia, Drew and Wayne
Global Dining Adventure and the African Safari.

The final fun of
the night was the last "Heads or Tails", which was
won by Tania Hindert, LFI ’04, who took home the Apple
MacBook.

Leadership Fairfax presented the
2009 Northern Virginia Leadership Awards (NVLA) to four
amazing regional leaders. Host Peggy Fox of
WUSA 9 emceed the event which focused on the theme “Partnerships
that Build Brighter Futures”. LFI’s Northern
Virginia Leadership Awards recognized two individuals and two
groups who have made a difference in childrens' lives in the Northern
Virginia community through their vision, innovation, and inspiration.

The Regional Leadership
Award, sponsored by CSC, recognizes an individual or
organization for leadership in advancing the cause and spirit
of regional collaboration and partnership.
Kevin
Reynolds, CEO of Cardinal Bank, was selected for his
continued and profound work with the area’s youth. His personal
dedication to the area’s youth has resulted in substantial
programs and funds for those in need. He is instrumental in the
creation of the Cardinal Classic Golf Tournament that has raised
more than $1 million for Inova Kellar Center. He also
supports a number of other charities in our region including the
American Heart Association, the City of Fairfax Renaissance Housing
Corporation, and Rotary International.

The Community
Partnership Award series recognizes organizations and individuals
that have best used their resources in conjunction with others
to enhance and enrich the lives of children living in the Northern
Virginia community.

Community Partnership Award
--Corporation
Cox Communications was selected for this award
based on their continued corporate citizenship and involvement in
the local community. Cox sponsors the CNN Headline News –
Local Edition that shines a spotlight on local community work, they
created free internet sites for disadvantaged Fairfax County residents
and also, through their Community Fund, gave money to local after
school programs.

Community Educational
Partnership Award--Nonprofit, sponsored by Northrop Grumman
Inova Kellar Center was chosen for this award based on
their continuing service to the needs of those with mental health
issues. By providing more than 30,000 educational and therapeutic
sessions per year, their services include Adolescent Day Treatment
Programs, the Intensive Outpatient Mental Health Program, the Substance
Use Disorder Program, Home-Based Services, the Kellar School and
the Kellar Camp. All services are given without regard for income
or payment ability and fill a gap in the mental health services
currently available in the community.

Community Partnership
Award --Public Sector
Dr. Gail Ledford, Fairfax County Government, was
honored for her more than 13 years of work with the County focusing
on integrating programs and funding for children and their families.
Her passion, combined with her skill as a manager, has benefitted
thousands of Fairfax families whose short term and long term needs
were met as a result of her efforts. Her efforts have resulted in
profound changes in the way children’s services are organized

Main Street Child Development Center is looking for people with big
hearts this holiday season. If you can open your heart to the Center
or one of our children or families this holiday season, they would love

CrisisLink is looking for new board members
to raise funds to support CrisisLink’s mission, promote the organization
and provide financial oversight and accountability. CrisisLink currently
has openings for those with professional backgrounds in law, strategic
planning, psychiatry and psychology, human resources, and fundraising
as well as community members with personal experience related to suicide
and mental health. Give back to our community and develop leadership
skills at the same time. There are evening meetings six times a year,
plus bi-monthly committee meetings, an annual retreat, and fundraising
events.
CrisisLink is a community-based nonprofit serving the entire Northern
Virginia/Maryland/DC region and dedicated to crisis prevention, intervention
and response. In the past 36 years, CrisisLink has answered more than
half a million crisis calls, responded to over 20,000 potential suicides,

"We
Are America Now" Seeking Volunteers
“We Are America Now” is in
the process of recruiting committee members for its awards ceremony
who can bring their expertise, fresh ideas and knowledge of the immigrant
community – preferably representative of different cultures. The
Committee will also recommend potential award recipients and/or evaluate
the submittals. Northern Virginia Family Services (NVFS) staff is available
to support at all levels. The ultimate goal is to bring awareness of
immigrant contributions, forge connections, gain support for NVFS, and
have a successful and sustainable recognition event.
"We Are America Now" is a recognition
ceremony to be held March 5, 2010 at the Fairview Park Marriott event
celebrating the immeasurable contributions of immigrants in the Washington
Metropolitan Region, primarily Northern Virginia. The event provides
a platform to recognize their powerful impact, achievements and indispensible
presence in our region. A powerful message will be delivered to demonstrate
that our community’s diversity and multiculturalism is vibrant,

LEAD VIRGINIA
Accepting Applications
LEAD VIRGINIA, a statewide leadership forum celebrating
its five-year anniversary in 2010, is accepting applications for its
upcoming 2010 class. LEAD VIRGINIA is a non-partisan, nonprofit educational
forum connecting Virginia’s proven leaders across the Commonwealth.
Each year LEAD VIRGINIA selects a group
of 45 senior executives representing business, government, nonprofit
and education sectors from throughout the Commonwealth. The annual program
consists of seven informative visits to different regions of the Commonwealth
to explore curriculum themes of the economy, education and healthcare.
Participants gain a 360-degree perspective of the Commonwealth, its
issues and challenges, and learn through a study of trends and analysis
how Virginia can best position itself for future economic vitality and
educational and workforce performance at regional and statewide levels.
Class members are exposed to challenges facing seven diverse regions
and gain an understanding of the resources, assets and mutual interdependence
of the regions. The class program includes a monthly visit to a different
region beginning in April and concluding in November.

Dallice Joyner, LFI ’09, of the
Northern Virginia Area Health Education Center was given an Excel award
by the Center for Nonprofit Advancement for excellence in nonprofit
leadership.
In Memoriam
Ann Rodriguez, LFI ’98, President and CEO of
the Arts Council of Fairfax County, passed away late last month from
cancer. Ann was not only a force for the arts, but also a leader in the Reston business community and the entire nonprofit community. She will truly be missed. In lieu of flowers, Ann requested that a contribution be made
to the Arts Council of Fairfax County. Information on a memorial service
to be held in the coming month will be forthcoming.
