What’s up with the classes? LFI/ELI Class updates

LFI:
The December program day at CIT in Herndon on the Virtual Road to Richmond was hosted by the ‘Community Based Organizations’ Team. During this day, supported by ExxonMobil, class members studied the relationship between community, local government and state government. A Health and Wellness day followed in January at Life with Cancer in Fairfax. The Health and Wellness day was orchestrated by the ‘Generations’ Team which interspersed their day with opportunities for exercise and relaxation. Lunch items from Lebanese Taverna, Raaga and Cee were donated to the class day through TakeOut Taxi with additional lunch contribution from Tara Thai.

Both days finished with networking opportunities: in December by invitation from the Fairfax Chamber of Commerce for their Meet Me @ Six networking mixer, and in January with a happy hour at Grevey’s restaurant sponsored by John Marshall Bank. And what was the best part of this January class day according to the class members? The dress code for the day: health club casual!

Next program day: February 11 – The Changing Face of Fairfax County: Rural, Suburban, Urban, at Old Town Hall in Fairfax City. (Note this has been postponed due to weather issues. It has been rescheduled for March 25th.)

ELI:
In December, the ELI class came together at FGM in Reston for a day concentrating on how to manage conflict by navigating challenging conversations presented by Strategic Interactions in the morning, followed by afternoon sessions on team processes and strategies by Jennell Evans, LFI ’00, and negotiation and problem solving skills in a nutshell by Ellen Kandell from Alternative Resolutions. The day’s content was arranged by Curriculum Committee member Sara Mariska.

The January program day gave the ELI Class members time to focus on their community service projects. The day started off with a presentation on managing your project by Jeanine Callahan, LFI ’99, Eagle Ray, Inc, followed by a session on presentation guidelines by Lynne Downer, ELI ’09 and Kevin Timothy, ELI ’09, both members of the ELI Curriculum Committee. Joe Meyer, LFI ’06 and Jill Tabuchi, ELI ’08, co-chairs of the Community Service Project committee were then on hand to meet with the five teams to evaluate their project progress and to answer questions about project deliverables and team needs. At noon time the class adjourned to give the teams a chance to get together separately to work on their projects and visit with their project’s non-profit organizations.

Next program day: February 16 – Effective Presentation and Communication Skills at Cooley Godward Kronish in Reston.

LFI/ELI Ride to Richmond:
On January 28 class members from both the LFI and ELI classes had an opportunity to take the bus to Richmond to observe their legislative representatives in action. This day, sponsored by Dominion, provided time to take a peek at General Assembly committee meetings and watch the General Assembly from the gallery, and gave the participants great insight inyo the workings of our legislature. At lunch time, Aubrey Tarkington, LFI ’91, a consultant/lobbyist for Dominion, gave his view on the life of a lobbyist. Under beautiful skies, the state’s capital showed itself in its best form and tours through the Capitol illustrated the immense historical importance of this setting. The ride back to Northern Virginia was pleasantly enhanced with spirited refreshments provided by Barry Biggar, LFI ’10 from Visit Fairfax. Thanks to Robby Demeria, LFI ’09, Lisa Lombardozzi, LFI ’09 and Byron Schulze, LFI ’09 for helping to organize this day.

Opportunities to Engage

Help With The Planning For The Children’s Science Center!

The 2010 ELI Class needs your help. As part of their ELI project they are helping with the planning process for the new Children’s Science Center. This center is a hands-on children’s museum that is being planned for the Northern Virginia area. Its focus will be on math and science. Northern Virginia is the largest region in the country that does not have a children’s museum at this time.

To assist in the planning process the Children's Science Center with the help of our ELI class is hosting a set of community forums. The next upcoming forum will be held on February 18 from 7-8:30pm. For the full listing visit www.thechildrenssciencecenter.org and click on the “Current News” tab.

Thanks for your help!

Board Members Needed for “Play with Words”

Here’s a fantastic opportunity if you enjoy creating projects and being in on the ground floor of building an organization! Play With Words is a hands-on children’s museum with literacy aspects, currently in development for Fairfax County. The organization is two years old and currently working on bringing a play-based learning experience to Fairfax County – something we are missing! (This is completely different that the Children’s Science Center which has been in development.) To learn more about us, visit our website at www.playwithwords.org.

We need to round out our current board with folks who are excited and willing to dig in and work to help us see this museum idea to fruition. Our current board consists of five members with various backgrounds. Skills that would be especially helpful would be accounting and finance; ability to help with strategic planning; a connection to literacy, the library system or the school system; start-up business experience; fundraising & development expertise; or a general love of books, children and community planning.
